A loan of $525 helped raising and selling chickens.

Fernando's story

Fernando João is 48 years old and is a single father of 3 children ages 6 to 14, all of whom attend school. In addition to his children he supports his two nieces who live with him. He manages to save 1.000.00 MT per month.

He left Nampula for Maputo and worked as a mechanic and locksmith for 5 years. He was then conscripted to serve his mandatory military service. After 6 years he was discharged and went to live with his brother in Vila de Namaacha on the border of Swaziland. He again worked as a mechanic and locksmith. Years later, with funds saved from his work, he started raising chickens, starting with a box and a half (1500x100) of chicks and approached Hluvuku to request a loan for 6.000.00 MT to increase the volume of his business. Today he is one of the best chicken farmers in the region and has purchased an average of 100x3 boxes of chicks at a cost of 24.000.00 MT in each phase. He has monthly earnings around 9.000.00 when none of the chicks die.

This is Fernando's second loan with Hluvuku and his first with Kiva. The first loan for 6.000.00 MT was used to grow his business raising chickens. This second loan for 15.000.00 MT will be used for the same purpose. He is confident that he will repay the loan before it is due and request a new loan to expand his chicken coops.
