A loan of $4,900 helped a member pay school fees for his children.

Abdul S.'s Group's story

These are teachers at one of the secondary schools in Makeni city. This school was established on the 4th of September 1980 to promote Islamic education in Makeni city and it environs. The school currently has 55 teachers and 2,060 pupils in the Junior Secondary school and 1,200 pupils in the Senior Secondary school.

School staff from this institution, like many other schools staff within SMT’s operational areas, comes to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish certain tasks that they would otherwise not be able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of this loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in a business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf.

50-year-old Abdul S. B. (last row, second from left) is the principal at the school. He was born in Makeni. He is married with eight children. Abdul will use this loan to pay school fees for his children and invest the rest in his business.
