Garmai's story

Meet Garmai, she is 50 years old and a widow with 7 children. They are presently in school and live at home. She runs a food business where she sells rice, pepper, vita, salt, sugar, bitter balls, charcoal, oil and onions. She started this business with some financial help from her husband and she learned how to sell by herself. She has been a trader for 29 years and she describes herself as hardworking business woman. She has had no problems with her business. She transports supplies to her business site by car. She sells from 7:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening. Garmai says, she likes her business because it helps to sustain her children and she is proud of her business because it makes her an independent woman. To continue selling, Garmai applied for a loan through BRAC Liberia and KIVA Field Partner. The loan will be used to purchase more rice, pepper, vita, salt, sugar, bitter balls, charcoal, oil and onions to sell. In the future she wants to buy a land and build her house. She wishes to say thanks.

This loan is special because:

It serves low-income individuals in rural Liberia where few alternative funding sources exist.
