A loan of $1,425 helped to stock her retail business.

Maria Monserrate's story

Sra. Maria, 33, is married and has three children, 9-years, 6-years, and 1-month old, respectively. Her husband is a construction worker and the family lives in Manta, one of the most important tourist spots on Ecuador's coast and known for its food and beaches.

Maria started a retail business 6 years ago to help her husband with the family's expenses. She sells Avon products--cosmetics and perfumes, for example--and underwear for both men and women. She has no fixed place of business and sells to customers throughout the city. She extends credits to her customers and collects from them weekly. Her earnings have improved her quality of life.

Maria is applying for a loan that she will use to buy Avon products and underwear for resale. When we asked her about her hopes for the future, she told us that she would like to have a store of her own.
