A loan of $675 helped to buy fertilizer for her fields and pastures.

Maria Nieves's story

The Nuevos Horizontes (New Horizons) Communal Bank is made up of a group of feisty women who are determined to be successful in their work and their daily lives in order to obtain a better future for their families. They all live in the beautiful city of Cuenca, known for its culture, architecture, traditions, people and rich gastronomic delights.

María V. has been a member of the Nuevos Horizontes Communal Bank for three years. Little by little she has grown her agricultural business cultivating vegetables, farming from 8am until 12pm. She also raises chickens, guinea pigs and she has one cow whose milk is for household consumption, although, occasionally she sells it to her friends in the community. She sells what little she grows in the Cuenca’s marketplace.

Our member lives in the parish of Sayausi in the Ramales neighborhood. She is 46 years old and has been divorced for the past 20 years due to the infidelity of her husband. With him she has 5 children between the ages 20 and 27 years old. Her oldest and youngest children work and help her with the household costs. The other three children are married and live independently. From her other relationship, she has two children who are currently 11 and 8 years old. She lives with her four children in her own house.

With the loan that she will receive from the institution, she will buy fertilizer for her fields and pastures in order to grow more produce to sell and for her family to eat. Her dream is to stay healthy in order to continue to work.
