A loan helped a member to buy more fresh varieties of soft drinks like soda, water and assorted juice.

Mariam's Group's story

Mariam's group is comprised of 3 hard-working women. Mariam is 20 years old and lives in the town of Ggaba in the Makindye region of Uganda. For the past 2 years, Mariam has been working hard to manage her beverage business, which sells soft drinks/pop cones.

To help expand her business, Mariam has requested a share of a loan of 4,300,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more fresh varieties of soft drinks like soda, water and assorted juice, and will help Mariam to generate greater profits and improve on her family standards of living. Mariam hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a bigger wholesale shop that sells soft drinks.

Mariam is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
