A loan of $1,650 helped a member pay school fees for his children.

Slmb Maroc Group's story

These are teachers at the S.L.M.B Maroc Primary School, Magburaka. S.L.M.B Primary school Maroc was built primarily for the purpose of Quranic reading, but later was transformed into English and Arabic learning. Presently, there are 20 teachers in the school and 705 pupils. S.L.M.B always makes good grades in public exams (The National Primary School Examinations-NPSE) and does well in sports. The school has produced a lot of highly qualified and trained professionals in all walks of life who are living and working in and outside of Sierra Leone.

This is the second loan S.L.M.B is accessing from Kiva through SMT. School staff from this institution, like many other schools' staff within SMT’s operational areas, come to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish certain tasks that they would otherwise not be able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of this loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf.

Fifty-seven-year-old Alimany K. (first row, second from right) is the head teacher at the school. He was born in Rochen, eight miles from Magburaka town. He is married with 9 children – 1 in college, 3 in secondary school and 5 in primary school. Alimany will use his loan to pay school fees for his children.
