Jose Heliodoro
José, 56, lives in the 380 neighborhood with his wife and son. He has been a bricklayer for over 15 years. This isn't easy work since it is exhausting physically and it's under the relentless sun. The most difficult part of it is not having work once a job is over; sometimes an entire week might go by before starting a new job. Sometimes he even has to travel to other departments to look for work there.

Gradually, he has been improving his own small house but he needs to install walls between the bath and toilet because they don't have the best hygienic conditions now. He will buy concrete blocks, sand and cement to build the wall. He hadn't done so before because he lacked the capital to do so because his earnings are barely enough to pay for food and other expenses.

Thanks to this help from the institution, he will be able to raise a wall between the bath and toilet and he will install a door and he will be able to enjoy the improvements.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
