A loan of $900 helped to buy milk, sugar, extracts, cinnamon and fruit.

María Elena's story

María Elena D. is a member of the communal bank "Esperanza para Superar." The members meet in the San Jacinto resort in the area north of Manabí.

Maria is married and has a 13 year-old daughter. In addition to being a housewife she has a small business selling homemade ice cream that she prepares; she also has a kiosk where she sells things to eat like cassava bread, empanadas and tortillas on the weekends. She begins her work very early in the morning because she has to have the ice cream ready by 11 in the morning. She purchased a large freezer where she can fit approximately 300 ice creams. Maria's daughter helps in the business selling the ice creams while she leaves to buy the products necessary to prepare them. The funds borrowed from the foundation are intended for her business. The new loan sought will be used to buy milk, sugar, extracts, cinnamon and fruit to make delicious ice cream.
