A loan helped to buy a biodigester to transform her farm into a sustainable business.

Alice's story

Alice is a farmer in Chebalungu, Kenya who has two cows and five goats on her farm. She lives with her six family members, and the money earned from the farm is the main source of income to support her family.

She is currently spending too much money in the purchase of LP gas and charcoal in order to power her home for cooking and heating bathwater. Her eight cubic meters Sistema.bio biodigester will allow her to use the abundant manure on-site to produce biogas to replace fossil fuels and petroleum-based agrochemical fertilizers.

The biodigester will transform the animal manure into both renewable energy (biogas) and methane-rich biofertilizer (biol).

Not only will Alice use the biogas to cook and heat bathwater for her family, but also use the biofertilizer generated by the biodigester to increase yields on her corn and forage fields. With this biofertilizer, she will no longer have to resort to expensive, petroleum-based agrochemical fertilizers thus allow her to expand her business and improve her farm in a sustainable way.

This loan represents 64% of the price of the biodigester; the remaining part is paid directly by Alice.

This loan is special because:

It saves farmers money by transforming waste into biogas and organic fertilizer.
