Jambo (hello) from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania!

This is MwanaH. S. and the Ulongoni loan group seated at the Makumbusho Branch Office of Tujijenge Tanzania, Ltd. MwanaH. is 33 years old and married with three children. Her children are 15, 13, and 5 years old.

MwanaH. is a hairdresser and her specialty is weaving and braiding hair. Many of her clients are local Tanzanian Rastafarians. She has been in the business for five years, and works from 8 a.m. till 6 p.m. daily. She makes a weekly profit of 35,000 Tanzanian shilling (about US$26).

MwanaH. has had one previous loan from Tujijenge, which she used to buy the cotton and thread that she braids into people's hair to make dreadlocks and extensions. She hopes to use this loan to buy more of the same supplies.

In the photo, MwanaH. is sitting in the front row wearing a bright yellow dress. She is seated with the other members of her loan group. They will all hold each other accountable for paying back the loan. The Ulongoni group thanks you for your support!

About Tujijenge Tanzania

This loan is administered by Tujijenge Tanzania, which was founded in 2006. It has operations in Dar es Salaam, the coastal region, and the Lake Victoria region. The organization aims to reach out to micro entrepreneurs and provide them with financial and social intermediation services because capital is one of the major barriers to development and success for micro-enterprise initiatives in Tanzania.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
