A loan helped to pay for a solar irrigation pump.

Lawrence's story

Lawrence is a 55-year-old smallholder farmer. He is based in Chibombo District in the Central Province of Zambia where he lives with his wife and three children.

Lawrence has been farming for over five years and grows maize, tomatoes and a variety of vegetables. Like most rural smallholder farmers, Lawrence uses buckets and other time and labour intensive methods of irrigation to water his crops. Lawrence is asking for a loan in order to obtain a solar water pump. A solar water pump will reduce the time and labour required for irrigation, hence increasing his efficiency and the quality of his produce.

Rent-To-Own is keen on testing new irrigation technologies that are not widely available on the Zambian market such as the solar water pump. With the cost of solar power dropping each year, in conjunction with the rising costs of fuel in the region, solar technologies are becoming a more viable option. Rent-to-Own will deliver the solar water pump directly to Lawrence farm and will provide Lawrence with training on how to use and maintain the pump properly.
