María's story

María, who is 45 years old, is a very sincere and honest woman. She lives in her own home with her husband Raúl, 47 years old, and her beloved daughter Natalia, who is now 12 years old. What Maria most desires is to give her family better quality of life. María has a stand in the most important market of her city, from which she sells products from the Andes. Seven mornings a week she sells potatoes, quinoa, goose and other natural products to her devoted clients. Her clients prefer to buy from her because she is a very happy and talkative merchant, and even more, because she sells very high quality products. What María likes best about her work is talking with her ¨neighbors,¨ the women who run the stands alongside her own. She has been earning her living through this work for 15 years and considers the most difficult part of the work having to deal with dirt that covers the potatoes when they arrive to her stand, since she always winds up very dirty, and that disgusts her. In the future she wants to have a store where she will sell her Andean products; this will improve her quality of life and provide her daughter with the opportunity to study a profession. This is Maria's fifth loan with MFP, the local organization she is working with. She is committed to making all of her payments on time, since she does not want to cause problems for her Community Bank, where she is loved by the her fellow members. With the 1000 soles (the currency of Peru) she has requested, Maria will buy more Andean products in order to expand her inventory.
