A loan of $675 helped pay the last installment on her land; purchase ingredients for her bakery; pay a few household expenses.

Laura Isabel's story

Laura P. is a member of the Mercy Communal Bank and has developed great friendships with the other members. She lives in the La Raya section of the community of Santa Ana. She is 63 years old and has been a widow for 17 years since her husband died of a heart attack. She has 3 children (ages 42, 38, and 28). Two of them are married and the other is single and helps her with the household expenses. She and her late husband were able to build their own home.

Laura has been baking bread since she was 15 years old. She has her own store and sells her products to neighbors in the community. In addition, she makes deliveries whenever they are requested. Her work begins at 3am and ends at 7pm every day without rest. Laura says she has both good and bad days, but she continues to press forward nonetheless.

She is now in her second loan cycle. With her loans, she has been able to pay a few debts and create capital. Laura will use the funds from this current loan to pay the final installment on the land she purchased. She will also buy supplies for her business such as flour, butter, yeast, and other items. Another small part of the loan will be used to cover her daily household expenses.
