Mariana De Lourdes's story

The community bank Mujeres de Trabajo (Working Women) is located in the city of Azogues, some 30 minutes from the city of Cuenca. Azogues has 32,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the province of Cañar, located in the south. The ruins of Ingapirca, one of the most visited attractions of Equador, lie just 50 km from Azogues. Azogues and Cañar are famous for their artesanal work, especially for the manufacture of straw hats, shawls and ceramic products.

Mariana C. is a member of Mujeres de Trabajo and is now in her third loan cycle. She has great charisma and gets along with all of her colleagues at the community bank. She lives on the route to Uchupucun in Azogues. She is 40 years old, single and lives in her mother's house. They support each other in the good times and bad that life presents them with, such as the death of Mariana's father, which she tells us with much sadness happened just two months ago.

Mariana works in a store selling magazines, lottery tickets, etc. She has worked in this business for 20 years and and tells us that there are good days and bad days. Her work schedule goes from 7am to 6pm, Mondays to Saturdays, and until midday on Sundays. As the store where she works is rented, she has invested her previous loans in getting the business up and running, and her new loan will be invested in growing the business. Her dream is to have her own house.
