María Elena's story

The community bank "El Despertar" (The Awakening) was started in the city of Cuenca, which was baptized and founded as Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca by the Spanish conquistadors. It is known for the 4 rivers that surround it and its historic city center. The temperature ranges from 14ºC to 18ºC (57ºF and 64ºF). The group's members, like all citizens of Cuenca, are very warm and friendly to locals and visitors alike.

María S. is a member of El Despertar community bank. She lives in the large city of Cuenca in the Indurama sector. María is 27 years old and is a native of Machala city. She is married; her husband works as a driver. They have an 11-year old son who attends the Liceo Americano (American high school).

María sells clothing as a street vendor in her neighborhood. She also sells her merchandise in Machala, where she often purchases additional inventory. María has done this work for 4 years. She is in her 6th loan cycle and says that the loans are helping the growth of her business. She has a good friendship with all the members of her community bank and is known to be a very charismatic person. With this loan she will invest in the purchase of additional merchandise. Her goal is to buy a car to be able to travel further to sell her merchandise.
