A loan of $1,400 helped a member to buy packages of used clothing in bulk to sell.

Las Trabajadoras 1 Group's story

Dorotea plans to use this loan to invest in her business selling used clothing. She buys large packages of used clothing shipped to the Dominican Republic from the United States and then sells them in her community.

Dorotea is the coordinator of her group, Las Trabajadoras (The Workers), and her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican clients (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti) generally. Her group is located in the slums that ring Santo Domingo, an urban area where crime is high. Running water (none of which is potable) and electricity are unreliable. She makes her home here in a simple structure with her family.

Dorotea is excited to be taking her second loan after having successfully repaid her previous loan. She will use the profits to reinvest in her business and for savings to build upon her very small base of possessions. She thanks you all for your support.

In this group: Dorotea, Leopoldiana, Leidy, Maribel, Teanny
