A loan of $10,000 helped a young entrepreneur to train and hire employees, buy equipment and rent a workspace to fulfill orders.

Vaughn's story

I was born in Saint Lucia, a small Caribbean island, that’s now known for a famous international jazz festival. My parents, a school teacher and a tradesman, raised five children. I believe I inherited my creative streak from my father, who was a carpenter and built houses, tiled, painted, and did glasswork. He was a plumber and an electrician – a jack of all trades in every sense of the word. My sense of business came from my mother and her side of the family.

On a Caribbean island that is more about vacations and tourism, entrepreneurship wasn’t a profession that was encouraged or that many aspired towards. Instead, many were content with just a day job and a paycheck, which presented a conflict for me.

I recognized migrating to the US provided an opportunity to realize my potential and explore my creativity. I pursued my passion, making sure to learn as much as I could of both the design and the business side. I attended the Art Institute of New York and graduated at the top of my class in Web Development and Interactive Media. This training, together with obtaining clients/customers, allowed me to incorporate the technical skills I learnt with my creativity to work with small business owners to develop their Websites, branding and conceptual needs - in online and offline marketing and advertising initiatives.

The concept of Twist By Vee was conceptualized in 2011 and become a product in 2017, which allowed the corporation I formed to provide the fashion world with a unique experience of elegance of the “Twist” lifestyle.
