A loan of $700 helped to buy and sell soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Joao Baptista's story

João Batista M. was born in the city of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. He is 55; married; and the father of 4 children who are 32, 28, 20, and 19. Three of them have their own homes. He studied through the 4th grade of the old education system and didn't continue because his parents didn't have the financial resources to keep paying for his school. He lives in his own home and supports his mother and his grandchildren that live with him. He left the central neighborhood in the city of Maputo for Boane with his family in 1974 to start a new life. He is a merchant and has owned his own business for more than 20 years. He works with his wife from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. He sells beer and soft drinks and earns a monthly income of around 5,000 to 6,000 meticais. He saves some of it in his bank account. He has never requested a loan from another bank. He became familiar with Hluvuku through some friends. This is his 4th loan, and it is for 20,000 meticais. He will use it to purchase products (soft drinks, wine, beer, etc.) for his business. His previous loans were for 8,000, 10,000, and 13,000 meticais, and they were all used for the same purpose. He would like to use this loan to meet the needs of his customers. In the future he hopes to request more credits to expand his business location.
