A loan of $10,000 helped to pay for renovations to expand her cafe space and to buy a cappuccino machine.

Robin's story

Robin and her husband moved from Pennsylvania to a small Floridian island in 2004, having already had experience working together in restaurants. When a little deli on the island came up for sale, the owner, who knew the couple as customers, gave them a good price and they took it. Robin says that owning the deli is a dream come true, and they're happy to be working together again.

One of their greatest achievements has been building their business up with local customers and becoming a positive force in their small community. Even though the summer is the off-season for tourists, Robin and her husband still enjoy good business from the locals who support their business year-round. Robin says they know all of their customers' names. Recently, Robin was proud to win an island competition called "Mango Queen," which she says brought in some increased business.

Now that they have established a strong presence in their community, Robin and her husband would like to expand their location. Robin says they only have twelve seats, so they run out of space quickly and have to turn a lot of business away. They will expand into the space next door and add more seats and some storage, and they will also purchase a cappuccino machine to increase their morning traffic.

Robin found out about ACCION USA through a small business development resource center in her area. She has been happy with the attention and advice she has gotten, and is relieved to take the financial pressure off of her credit cards. She hopes that the extra space and business will allow her to hire more employees, which will provide her and her husband with some much-needed time off every once in a while.
