Chrishella's story

I am a Milwaukee native, raised in the Sherman Park community. Always having a passion for youth involvement, I decided to study education and received my degree in Elementary Education from Alabama State University. I brought the skills I learned back to Milwaukee and taught K-4th grade students. While in the classroom, I noticed that students (even at a young age) were trying to manage anxiety, depression, and societal pressures to be the "perfect scholar". This saddened me and I wanted to take a break from teaching because I felt like there was something more I could do. I took some time to live and continue teaching but this time abroad and I noticed children all over were dealing with some of the same issues but managing them differently. I observed different coping techniques that were encouraged, practiced, and utilized them in my personal life and with my students. Some of the most common techniques I noticed was painting, poetry, meditation, and music. I decided to come back home (Milwaukee) and instead of going back into the traditional classroom, I created my own "Classroom". I created Vibez Creative Arts Space. At Vibez, I want youth and adults to learn different techniques to express themselves so that we don't have to experience another Sherman Park (or Milwaukee) uprising.
