A loan helped to buy more charcoal.

Winnie's story

Winnie is 20 years old and lives in the town of Makindye in the Makindye region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past 2 years, Winnie has been working hard to manage her charcoal sales business.

To help expand her business, Winnie has requested a loan of 800,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more charcoal, and will help Winnie to generate greater profits. As Winnie will realize more profits from the expanded business, she will be in position to improve on her standards of living and also cater for her child and pay the respective school dues.

Winnie hopes that in the future she will be able to become a strong business woman.

Winnie is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
