A loan helped to buy diesel and fertilizer for farming activities.

Larisa's story

Larisa is a 35-year-old farmer from the village of Selemet, Cimislia Region, Moldova. She is married and has two children. She lives with her husband and her two daughters in her house that she inherited from her parents. This year her daughter, Irina, graduated from the local middle school and will go to high school.

Larisa makes sheep cheese. She started the business six years ago with a small number of animals. The income she earned in these years has allowed her to increase the number of animals she owns. Currently she has 80 sheep, six pigs, one cow and poultry. A part of the meat and cheese are used for family consumption, the rest is for the business. She leased 10 hectares of arable land from landholders in the village. She raises feed and grows sunflowers. Income from the business is the only source of income for her family. Larisa applied for the loan from the Kiva for the procurement of fertilizer and diesel. As a result, she will increase harvest productivity and reduce the expense of the manual labor.

This loan is special because:

It enables those living in rural areas to grow their businesses at a lower interest rate.
