María Luisa
Maria R. is a busy woman! She lives in Ayacucho, Peru with her husband and daughter. She can almost always be found behind the reception desk at the “hospedaje,” or hotel, which the couple has owned for over 7 years. She works seven days a week checking customers in, overseeing improvement projects, and managing the hotel's 2 employees. Luckily, she has the help of her husband, who is a co-administrator for the hotel. Next door, also on the busy Avenida de Tres Mascaras, their daughter owns a shop specializing in gum, sweets, and beverages.

Maria is quite proud of her hotel, which contains 24 rooms. It is an upscale lodging, with hot water and private bathrooms. She says most of her clients are business people from all over Peru, along with visiting foreigners. Maria has many goals for the improvement of her hotel, which she says is an ongoing project. She hopes to receive a loan of $1,100, which she will use to put new tile on all 4 floors of the hotel, as well as the staircases. This endeavor is already underway, with beautiful blue hand-painted ceramic tiles replacing the generic white squares presently covering the floors. She is pleased with the new look so far, but the materials and labor are quite expensive, and this loan would allow her to finish the project.
