A loan helped to buy farming inputs, such as nutrient-rich fertilizers and seeds, to improve his production and use the profits to pay school fees for his children.

Robert's story

Robert is a farmer full of hopes and dreams in his life. He wants to get his family ahead by the sweat of his brow. He is a smallholder farmer residing in Litein, an agricultural town in the North Rift region of Kenya.

Robert is arguably among the most successful clients of Juhudi Kilimo, a microfinance institution that deals only with smallholder farmers in rural parts of Kenya. Agriculture is his family's occupation, and also the primary source of income for his family. Access to modern-quality farm inputs is the pillar of the agricultural revolution. However, in Kenya, a developing country, fertilizers and seed allocation by the government is way below the needs of farmers. Since Juhudi Kilimo, which is in partnership with Kiva, ventured into the affairs of smallholder farmers in Kenya, farmers can attest that there has been a significant improvement in input availability from before.

Robert is seeking this loan so that he can buy farming inputs - nutrient-rich fertilizers and certified seeds - to improve his farm, make more output and earn more sales revenue. The returns from the investment will change his life and that of his entire household, as he will use the additional income to raise their living standards and pay for his children's education. Robert has a great desire to succeed and also has a desire that Kiva lenders listen to his request and help him better his life.
