Marannatha 1 & 2 Group's story

Edline is a 33-year-old borrower from Santiago, Dominican Republic. She is the coordinator for her group, Marannatha (Christ is Coming), and her story is representative of the other borrowers in the group.

Edline and the Marannatha group live in a difficult part of Santiago, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. Although most of the city has access to running water and somewhat reliable electricity, their neighborhood has none. Edline is a single mother of one, a three-year-old son. Despite raising her child on her own and living in a difficult part of town, Edline runs a successful small business selling clothing to her neighbors and friends.

With her new loan, Edline will buy “ropa de paca”, or packs of used clothing, usually from the United States. This is a common way for people to purchase clothes here; it is cheap and, although used, the clothes are usually in great condition. With the profits from her expanding business, Edline hopes to send her son through school, all the way up through university. This way he can have opportunities that were not available to her as a child. Thank you for lending to Edline and the Marannatha group!
