Maria Isabel's story

MARIA ISABEL L. F., 47, lives in the Las Delicias district, Trujillo province, La Libertad department, Perú. She is a member of the SIEMPRE UNIDAS (ALWAYS UNITED) communal bank. She studied to be a Teacher's Aide but has not been able to work in this profession because when she finished her studies she got married and had to focus on her home and on raising her three children, only one of whom is still dependent on her economically since she is a university student. Maria prepares and sells meals typical of the region like: rice with duck, roasted duck, kid, cebiche (raw fish marinated in lemon juice), soups, etc. in her home-based restaurant. With her first 300 new sol loan she bought tables and crockery for her restaurant and with her next 1000 sol loan she will buy rice, vegetables, oil, pastas, potatoes, etc. to use in preparing the meals that she will prepare and sell. She dreams with remodeling and enlarging her restaurant for which she is saving money hoping thereby to improve her locale.
