A loan of $2,000 helped to invest in raw materials so she can secure consistent weaving work and increase her income potential.

Mae's story

Mae’s life story is full of dramatic twists and turns. When she was young, her entire village was uprooted from the jungle by the Thai government and “resettled” in a camp during the communist uprising. When they were able to return, the jungle had changed and turned into competitive farm land centered around slash & burn.

She worked hard in the fields for many years to support her family, but now she is a grandmother and she isn’t physically able to participate in manual field labor anymore. Even though she is getting older, she wants to feel that she is contributing to help her family.

Hammock weaving was the answer to Mae’s hopes. She is able to work from home on a flexible schedule and earn far more than she did in the fields.

Weaving hammocks has brought so many benefits to Mae’s life! She is thrilled to be participating in the Kiva loan program again in order to stabilize her income for the coming year and continue to make progress on her goals.

This loan is special because:

It creates employment opportunities for vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas.
