A loan of $350 helped to diversify her goods.

Astou's story

Ms. Astou P. has lived in the zone of Camberene, an area situated north of Dakar, for several years. Her main activity is dressmaking, but she is especially turning towards selling boubous (wide-sleeved West African robes) and fabric. She draws on three years of experience in this field. She is married and a parent beneficiary (of the U-IMCEC loan program described below). She is seeking a loan of 150,000 francs, which will be used to buy shoes and various other items to diversify her merchandise and enlarge her business. In this way, she will be able to increase her monthly profits by 10,000 francs.

Ms. Astou P. is a beneficiary of the agreement between U-IMCEC (one of Kiva's field partners) and the Programe for the Development of Children and Families (PDEF in French) Seydina Issa Laye. The PDEF seeks to reduce poverty within the community, and especially to protect children who come from destitute families. Thanks to this cooperation, the parents of these children can benefit from loans having more flexible terms as compared to ordinary loans. Since the agreement's inception in December 2008, 120 parents have received financing in amounts varying from 50,000 to 150,000 francs.
