Tamela's story

A wife, mother and entrepreneur at heart. I took a leap of faith and followed my heart, and started Rock Cancer C.A.R.E. Inc. After recovering from my own battle with cancer and experiencing moments of hopelessness and overwhelmingly confusion, I was lead to my purpose in life; to help others find comfort and hope in the midst of the cancer battle and to create programs that support them in their daily lives.

I then earned two Master's Degrees in Business Administration and Organizational Management. I wrote my Master Thesis on how I would sustain a Soul food restaurant. Shortly after, I became the owner of La Soul Food Catering. The response to the food was overwhelmingly positive and the catering business turned into a full restaurant.

I had an exciting 24/7 career path and an on-the-go mom routine. It came to a halt, when I woke up one morning with a lump on my chest. I had Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. I was overwhelmed by all of the needs that come along with cancer while maintaining my home and being a mother to 6 month and 5 year old daughters. I was struggling to figure out how to fill the gaps in my care,(child-care, meal preparation, emotional support, homeschooling.)Through my own experience I realized i wasn’t the only one in need of an organization that provided complete cancer patient support. I took my experiences and skills to draw attention to the effects cancer has on an individual and their family

Rock Cancer C.A.R.E. Inc. became one of the first cancer care organizations in San Diego to offer resources, support and help for free.
