A loan helped buy and house our own milking cows, giving us a secure, stable and affordable source of milk to make our dairy products.

Monique's story

In February, 2007, Pacific Dairy shipped out the last of its milking herd to a U.S. mainland farm, marking the end of the dairy industry on the island of Oahu. As Farm Manager there for 17 years, I watched as farm after farm closed – small family farms, large community farms and finally our farm. Even though ours was the largest dairy in the state, we met the same fate as the others, losing to the high cost of imported feed.

I knew if I wanted to continue my life’s career as a dairy farmer, I’d have to either move to the mainland or stay in Hawaii and start my own dairy. I chose to stay and created the Naked Cow Dairy. It would be a small, family farm, focusing on humane treatment of animals with a creamery that produces specialty, artisan dairy products.

I had more than enough negative input from those who’d been in the dairy business far longer than me. I was called “crazy”, told “you’ll run out of money before you ever get started” and my favorite “you have more guts than brains!”

So I steered away from those who didn’t believe in me and my vision, and found people who did (mostly family and friends).

Today, I can proudly say we’re the only cow dairy producing cheese and gourmet butters in Hawaii. It’s rewarding to see people enjoy the cheese and butter that I made from the cows I raised, fed and milked.

I have many years of experience in the dairy industry. As the only dairy farmer on Oahu, I’d like to share my farm and my experience to teach a new generation of young farmers in Hawaii about the benefits of our way of dairy farming.

This loan is special because:

It helps a female entrepreneur expand her farm as the sole local dairy producer on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii!
