A loan helped to purchase improved farm supplies that will increase farm yield.

Bala's story

Bala, a Babban Gona maize farmer is married and lives in a modest mud house with his family in Iyatawa village. Bala is a meticulous farmer who has invested time and resources on his farm and like every parent, hopes to see his children work twice as hard and become successful in the future.

Previously, despite toiling for 7 hours on his farm each day, Bala was only able to feed his family 2 meals a day. Now that he is a Babban Gona member, he will as a result of this loan, be provided with higher yielding seeds that are locally adapted, and are widely accepted in his local community. He will also have the recommended pesticides and fertilizers based on the results of his field assessment. This will enable him to optimize his yield, where he can attain yields of up to 3.8 metric tonnes per hectare; 2 times the national average in Nigeria. This will not only increase his income earnings 2.8 times the national average but also ensures that Bala can continue to provide for his family.

With increased yield and income of up to 2.8 times the national average, Bala looks forward to using his additional income to pay his children's school fees and also buy more farmlands, and remembers sending his children to better schools as his best memory as a Babban Gona member.

Bala looks forward to a brighter future with Babban Gona as he too has joined the fight against poverty.
