A loan of $10,000 helped provide working capital to expand our wholesale presence in Whole Foods and Starbucks, offset the training costs for two new employees, strengthen our marketing efforts, and provide equipment.

Rachel's story

Hi, I'm Rachel Elaine Bernier- Green. I was born and raised in Chicago and Homewood Illinois. I'm the oldest of 6 children and happily married to Jaryd Bernier-Green. My big, crazy family is the engine that keeps 'Laine's Bake Shop running.

I'm a proud alumna of Homewood Flossmoor High School and a three time alumna of the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign.

My mother Elaine introduced me to my love of baking. The first recipe that I remember learning was actually a brownie recipe that I learned during a home school math lesson on fractions. Apparently, something clicked with both the math and the baking since I’m now a baking accountant! I went on to earn my bachelor’s and master’s degrees and enjoyed a career in the fields of Accounting and Finance before returning to my love of baking and starting ‘Laine’s Bake Shop!

I've had an entrepreneurial spirit for as long as I can remember. As a child I played dress up as Madame C.J. Walker (the 1st self made African American female millionaire), Oprah, and other business icons. I also created businesses and employed my siblings and friends to do everything from making soaps, candles, and crafts to selling snacks and food at lunch stands. To this day I love both the creative and entrepreneurial aspects of learning to run a business. In college this interest expanded to learning how to use business as a tool for social impact by measuring success based on the impact on the planet and my community in addition to financial measures.

I am excited to use my experiences to continue to take things to the next level with 'Laine's!

This loan is special because:

It helps this second-time borrower expand into grocery stores.
