A loan of $10,000 helps a single mother and her daughter to grow their skate park and skate shop by increasing inventory.

Jeannene's story

I learned responsibility and independence from a very young age. My mother inspired me, as she did her best to care for my siblings and I despite her past traumas. Mom always encouraged me to follow my dreams, saying, "You can do anything if you put your mind to it", and "There is nothing to fear but fear itself". I became a nurse and had three children. When my oldest was six, she was diagnosed with a rare chronic illness called XLH. In 2006 my youngest suffered a traumatic brain injury, and my middle son fractured his femur after a head on collision. Physical therapy became a norm for our family, although what helped most was riding bikes, scooters and skating. Trauma brings a family closer, but my husband and I grew apart. My mom passed in 2010, and a year later my marriage ended. Suddenly I was a single mom with three children.

Two years later, my daughter and I went to check out a new local skatepark needing financial assistance. A donation turned into a partnership, and I learned how to run a skatepark and shop. Unfortunately, my partner stole from the business and was not a "good influence" on children. After a year he left and took half of the inventory, selling everything online, which was devastating. My daughter and I became partners and we changed the name to "Above Board Skate Shop and Skatepark of Greensboro". Shortly after, we were forced to close for rezoning. We spent eleven long months bringing the building up to code. We passed inspection and reopened on July 9th: my mom's birthday. I've always dreamed of being a part of something bigger than myself. I have discovered great purpose sharing this opportunity with my daughter, my sons, and the community.
