A loan of $1,025 helped to buy spare parts for her vehicles.

Carmen's story

46-year old Carmen is a strong woman, determined to see her family get ahead in life. She is also a source of support for her husband in the various roles they have, such as parents of two children who live with them in the house which they managed to build after a great deal of effort. Five years ago they had the chance to acquire three ‘motocarros’ (three-wheeled motorized carts), which are a great help in making ends meet. Carmen manages the business and makes sure the motocarros are working properly. The vehicles are rented to various people, generally young men, who earn a living by transporting passengers in these ‘taxis’. For this reason Carmen checks that they are responsible people and use the motocarros in an appropriate manner. Repairs and maintenance are essential, and she tries to have them done every month to avoid a major breakdown which would affect their economic situation.

In the short term, Carmen plans to save money to buy an additional vehicle which can be used to bring in money if one of the others is under repair. She is an individual borrower with Kiva partner, Microfinanzas PRISMA, and this is her second loan. She plans to continue making improvements to her business. The 3000 soles which she is seeking will allow her to buy some spare engine parts so that there will be no future problems with the vehicles.
