Oyatunde's story

For years, friends were reaching out to me to attend amazing film festivals in other cities. I love to travel, but thought folk in Detroit would love to see these films too. There were great film series in the city, but films by women of color were rare. The idea to start the Detroit Women of Color International Film Festival was born. I wanted a festival that focused on films by or about women of color from around the world. I incorporated my skills as an activist, educator, and artist to create a forum to spark conversations about women’s rights and social justice. The festival was overwhelmingly supported by the community and filmmakers. People came from all over the United States and Canada to attend the festival. I have been an activist for over twenty years, but my experience producing film festivals changed my life. I learned the power of moving art to inspire the audience to look at the world through a new lens. Film helps people let down their guards, and opens doors for deeper conversations with audiences. My mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. I was trying to plan film festivals and programs, while caring for my mother during her healing journey. Eventually I had to make a choice between running my organization or fully committing to support my mom as she fought for her life. I chose my mother. She survived cancer. Now my goal is to work full time on making the DWC, Inc. a viable force in the community. I want the Detroit Women of Color, Inc. to be a beacon of light for girls and women of color, and impact the city of Detroit and ultimately the world in a positive way.
