A loan of $5,000 helped us to purchase equipment to more efficiently grow hops on our rural test farm, which supports our urban Hops on Lots Pittsburgh partnerships.

Pete's story

I grew up near Hershey, PA and moved to Pittsburgh in 1997 to attend PITT and never left. After spending years working in unfulfilling jobs, I decided to take the first ever community garden class offered by Grow Pittsburgh in the summer of 2015. This class inspired me to start my own unique community garden project called Hops On Lots Pittsburgh. Together with my friends Joe & Phoebe we teamed up with local communities to use less then ideal space to grow hops. Rather than a traditional community garden where it benefits only those participating, the hop gardens benefit everyone within the community. Those who are not into gardening can participate with the project by drinking the beer produced by their local hops.
Our first season we had such a great time and great success we decided to take this a step further and create the Pittsburgh Hop Company to continue and grow the HOLP project but also grow hops commercially to better supply the ever growing craft beer market in Pittsburgh.

This loan is special because:

It will allow for equipment improvements for this hops farm.
