Sonia Chanela's story

Sonia belongs to the “Mujeres del Siglo XXI” (Women of the 21st Century) Community Bank in the district of Juli, province of Chucuito, department of Puno, Peru. She is 28 years old, has a common-law husband, and is a mother of two children. She has a nursing degree and lives in the neighborhood of Santa Cruz. She has worked with Kiva partner Manuela Ramos for the past four years and started out with a loan of 300 soles, which she used for her crafts business. Currently she is requesting a loan of 500 soles (approximately $175), which she plans to use to purchase cloths and wools of different colors to make her embroideries that she sells to tourists at the regional markets. Her dream is to set up a grocery store and to practice her profession. Sonia enjoys the savings and meetings she gets as part of her community bank.
