Aminata's story

Mrs. Aminata D., 48, is married and the mother of 8 children. She lives in a monogamous family with her husband and children in the Pélengana Sud neighborhood of Ségou (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali).

Having left school after the 9th grade of basic school (in the Malian education system) in order to get married, she began at the age of 10 to work, helping her mother who sold milk on foot, since her Peulh parents had lots of animals. After several years spent in apprenticeship with her mother, she decided to go out on her own, opting to buy and sell firewood, which she has now been doing for 14 years. Besides firewood, she also sells rice and onions in the “Château” open-air market.

She came to Soro Yiriwaso 54 months ago hoping to make more profit and expand her business. After 5 solidarity loans and 2 individual loans, all correctly reimbursed, she intends to use this third individual loan to buy 4 loads of firewood, 2 sacks of rice, and 2 sacks of onions. She buys her goods in the villages around Ségou.

Mrs. Aminata D. sells for cash or credit to a clientele composed mainly of women and a few men (who are mostly bakers or meat-roasters). She expects to make a monthly profit of 40,000 F CFA which will be used as working capital and to help her husband support the family.
