Sabina M. is an enterprising and resourceful 45-year-old woman who lives with her 6 children.

She has been working with Kiva partner EDAPROSPO – Prosperidad for several years, and holds the office of president of the “Caminando Juntos” communal bank. This group is maD. up of 11 members who make a living as street vendors selling different foods such as cakes, mazamorras [a corn pudding dish], candied peanuts, and breakfasts (consisting of maca [an Andean root vegetable] and quinoa).

For 6 years now Sabina has maD. a living selling food from a stand outsiD. a textile factory. The journey from her home to her stand takes between 50 and 60 minutes, and she brings approximately 40 to 50 prepared meals with her. She sometimes has help from her daughter, but at other times she carries all of the weight herself.

Sabina and the other members of her group will use this loan of 400.00 soles to invest in the purchase of new pots for selling their foods; the pots that they currently use are small and do not hold enough for all of their customers.

Sabina’s wish is to set up a grocery store in her home, since she is tired of going out to sell meals every day so far from her home.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
