A loan of $400 helped to buy seeds and high-nutrient fertilizers.

Philice's story

Philice is a hardworking farmer from a remote village in the Kitale central area of Kenya. Through her daily struggles, she has managed to give her beloved children a decent lifestyle by taking them to a good public school.

Philice has a farm where she practices dairy farming and rearing of livestock. At her early age, she missed a chance to be admitted in any school due to her parents’ poverty. However, she earned many skills and experience in farming. Most farmers in her area have specialized in maize farming, leading to its surplus in the market and a high demand for other crops such as vegetables. With the knowledge Philice has gathered in horticulture, she wants to grow vegetables such as onions, carrots, tomatoes and cabbages in her small farm. Philice lacks the initial capital to buy seeds and fertilizers. She is confident that if she gets any financial support, her enterprise will thrive and she will pay back her loan.

For poor women like her who do not have any form of collateral security, trying to acquire a loan in any financial institution in her area is like planting seeds on a rock. However, Juhudi Kilimo has intervened in her area and she is aware of it, thanks to her friends. Her dreams to be an independent woman and to have job security can now come true with the support of the Kiva community. Every coin you lend to her makes a great impact in her life and that of her family.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals and farming equipment.
