A loan of $625 helped a member to purchase two solar lights and to gain access to cost-efficient hybrid seeds and fertilizer for maize cultivation.

Martha's Group's story

Martha, aged 36, is the proud mother of five children. She is often described as a very friendly person and, as the group leader, is representing her group of eight farmers in the Webuye District. Since joining One Acre Fund in 2014, Martha has noticed that she has earned more profits from each harvest.

Martha described her harvest as good last year, but believes she can have a better one this year by continuing to work with One Acre Fund. She is very excited to be purchasing two solar lights, in addition to cost-efficient hybrid seeds and fertilizer, as she will now be able to reduce the family's consumption of paraffin fuel and therefore save more money. With the profits from this season’s harvest, she plans to buy a cow.

With this loan, Martha’s group will be able to plant a total of 5.25 acres of land and purchase five solar lights.

In this group: Martha, Margaret, Hellen, Naomi, Sarah, Stephen, Allan, Zipporah

This loan is special because:

It supports smallholder farmers to purchase seeds and solar lanterns.
