A loan of $50,000 helped to support 800+ farmers by improving their productivity and increasing their income.

Exportadora De Café Especial De Guatemala's story

Loan Use and impact

Guatemala only has two companies that supply jute sacks used to store and ship coffee grains. This particularly impacts rural coffee producers because delays in jute sack shipments delays coffee producers ability to export. The loan will be used to fund a jute sack printer and all the expenses related to its purchases.Within the first year, FECCEG expects to save USD26k from current costs and generate USD20k from sales of jute sacks to other coffee producers. Following the loan repayment, the future savings will be used to invest in programs for farmers.

The Problem

Low coffee prices and lack of access to international market force many farmers in Guatemala to stop growing coffee a primary source of income.

The Solution

FECCEG (a second level cooperative comprised of 12 small producer coops) was formed to integrate smallholder coffee farmers and provide them with technical assistance to improve the quality of their coffee and help them access international markets. To improve their productivity, FECCEG trained personnel who assist farmers in production of organic inputs. FECCEG also set up their own drying unit and quality control laboratory for the farmers. FECCEG also owns Kishe, a retail coffee seller to help connect directly with consumers. Check out their video here. Most importantly, FECCEG's owns a commercial and exporting subsidiary called Exportadora De Café Especial De Guatemala. ECEG exports their coffee to United States, Spain, Australia, France, Germany, Belgium and Japan thus giving farmers access to international market.

Impact

885 farmers have improved their yield through their programs and been able to sell their products to international markets. 35O farmers were offered the service of dry beneficiary. FECCEG has also helped farmers diversify their income streams by helping them expand into honey and brown sugar.
