Maria Elena's story

María lives in the area of Zhidmad, five minutes from the community of Santa Ana, in the province of Azuay. The climate is varied as in the town of Cuenca and the majority of the inhabitants are farmers. María is 32 years old, married with four children, 10, 8, 4, and 2 years old, the three oldest attend the school of Santa Ana. She lives in her own house, her husband works in construction (builder), Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. María commutes to the town of Cuenca to work in housekeeping. Her young children stay at home with her husband's grandmother who is 80 years old and lives with them. When María returns in the afternoon she looks after her children and feeds her animals.

On their property they have four pregnant heads of cattle, pigs she raises to be sold, hens, and a few guinea pigs for domestic consumption. With the loan of US$1100 requested she will buy chickens to be raised, food (balanced) and other necessities for the business as well as search for consultancy with this project. María has been a partner of the "Fundación Espoir" for five years, she has had previous loans and is very grateful to Espoir for the support being offered. It is her goal to be able to buy a vehicle (pick-up truck) in order to distribute the chickens herself to different places of the town.
