A loan of $8,000 helped lift an artist's business to the next level by providing the infrastructure necessary to participate in craft shows and fairs.

Jacob's story

I’m a Minneapolis artist ready to take my business to the next level.

I started Design Canoe Studio in 2015 as a place to make multimedia sculpture from stone, driftwood, stained glass, and candlelight. While I make art, I sell nostalgia and atmosphere, which is what my pieces create for those who place them in their homes and businesses.

I grew up in Bridgewater, a Nova Scotian town on the east coast of Canada. My education includes History, Architecture, the Machining Trade, and Information Technology. In 1998 I started a successful 15-year career as a Data Warehouse Developer and Senior Technical Manager, much of which was in the banking sector of Charlotte, North Carolina. …But I’ve always been artistic and art kept popping up throughout all of this.

In 2014 I suffered a debilitating major depression. As painful as it was I’ve come to understand it as a gift, because it moved me to examine my life and what I was doing with it. Today I’m an artist, with the support of my family and friends who see me doing what I love.

Last August the American Craft Council (ACC) accepted my work, giving me the opportunity to be an exhibitor at their St. Paul Show this April. ACC shows feature some of the best artists and craftspeople in North America, so this is a fantastic chance to present my work for the first time, to an audience in the market for high quality arts and crafts. This show will be the first of several I attend this year in the Twin Cities and along Minnesota’s North Shore.

My immediate goal is to assemble what I need to attend the St. Paul ACC Show. I also need some equipment that will enable me to replenish inventory more quickly.
