Juanita's story

Juanita belongs to the Communal Bank “Nuestra Sra. de Guadalupe” [Our Lady of Guadalupe]”, located in the District of Bellavista, Province of Bellavista, Department of San Martin. She lives with her partner, is 43 years old, and is a mother to 5 children, 2 of which still depend on her.

She began selling fresh fish many years back because she wanted to help her family with the extra income. She did this with a loan of 200 PEN, which was well invested; today she continues in the same business but with larger quantities and a larger variety of species.

With this loan of 1,500 PEN she will purchase fresh fish by the kilo from both the region and the coast of the country, such as: bocachico, pomfret, sungaro, snakefish, toa, gamitada, tilapia, toyo, and pejerey, to be able to keep her business well-stocked and to satisfy her clients’ demanding taste.

She tells us that she is happy to belong for so many years to a group of women that has helped her get through the difficult times that she has had to face, but that she now faces with a lot of strength.
