A loan helped the improvement of her gateaux-frying business and her farm.


Alice Lum's story

Alice is married with six children. She lives in Azire, Cameroon. Alice and her entire family live in a house with 4 rooms. Alice overcomes many challenges in life such as taking care of her children and supporting her husband by paying fees for their children.

Alice runs a restaurant business frying gateaux (a kind of cake) in front of the family compound with the support of her children. She plans to invest this loan in her business and other farm work. Alice hopes expand this business since she has been operating it for a number of years.

This will be Alice's second loan from GHAPE. She has been a member since 2008. Her business is very successful due to its location and Alice's reasonable prices. Thanks to the experience she has, she now serves more customers.

Part of her profits from this loan will be used to take care of her ageing mother, as well as to buy necessities for her family and her grandchildren. The other part of the loan will be used to improve her farm. Alice intends to start repayment immediately on the day of collection.

The Grounded and Holistic Approach to People's Empowerment (GHAPE) is a non-profit NGO based in Bamenda, Cameroon. GHAPE works towards the empowerment of the poor and poverty alleviation through a highly multi-faceted approach. Every client is trained in business management, basic health, life skills, financial management, profits and losses, and family values. Clients are also required to contribute a small amount into a personal savings account; most clients save much more than the minimum requirement. GHAPE instils a sense of family and community within its clients and staff and has developed a strong bond of trust between the organization and its clients.
