A loan helped a community business revitalize its working capital to broaden its outreach.

Jj's story

I grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts with a family who believes in eating real food, and I learned to cook from my mother. As I grew older, through my travels I noticed that commercial food was more frequently being flown from far away places, or coming in a processed form that was less than nutritious or delicious. When I had my kids I started to seriously worry about the possibility that the milk I was feeding to them contained dangerous additives, and that worry launched me into investigating where our food was coming from.

As I learned more about the process foods we ate I became committed to cooking wholesome and nutritious meals from natural ingredients locally sourced for my family. I wanted to share my knowledge of genuinely grown foods with others and wanted to help sustain local farmers. From this desire Cuisine en Locale was born, and later the venue ONCE. Cuisine en Locale allows me to provide honest food from farmers that are true to the land.

Cuisine en Locale stays committed to serving local food through catering at other events or in our own venue ONCE, which holds weekly events for local entertainers. I am proud to have created a welcoming, passionate environment where so many from the community now consider this their space.

This loan is special because:

It supports the local-food provision in Massachusetts and a mother growing her business
