A loan of $50,000 helped to enable 5,000 additional small-holder farmers across rural Kenya to sustainably harvest croton nuts—an abundant and indigenous crop with no previous commercial use.

Eco Fuels Kenya's story

Problem

Rural smallholder farmers in Kenya deal with a variety of issues in their daily lives, including but not limited to: cost-prohibitive diesel fuels for machinery; expensive farm inputs such as livestock feed; unsustainable chemical-based fertilizers; and volatility of low margin staple cash crop prices.

Solution

Eco Fuels Kenya (EFK), founded in 2012, is committed to alleviate poverty for rural smallholder farmers by commercializing the croton nut — a nut that grows abundantly and indigenously across East Africa with no other previous commercial use.
EFK has devised an innovative, no-waste process that transforms these nuts into sustainable products that include:

-Croton oil biofuel: a natural replacement for diesel fuel in water pumps and generators

-Croton seedcake: a cheap protein source for poultry feed

-Organic Fertilizer: a soil stabilizer that reverses degradation caused by chemical fertilizers

EFK’s products are not only environmentally friendly, but also cheaper than traditional substitutes and all bought & sold locally. Today, EFK purchases these croton nuts from over 5,000 farmers across Kenya at fair prices—boosting their annual income by 30-50%.

Loan Use

With funding from Kiva, EFK will double its supply network to 10,000 farmers as it continues to scale its operations and expand its tree planting programs.
