This is Alhaji Issa S.. Alhaji is a local entrepreneur in Magburaka town; he sells medicine at the town’s main market. This will the fifth loan Alhaji is accessing from SMT/Kiva. Previous loans have made a tremendous impact into the live and business of this entrepreneur. Having made his last loan repayment as member of a solidarity group, he is now asking for a loan of SLL1,000,000 as an individual client.
Alhaji was born in Magburaka town, fifty-four years ago. He is married to a businesswoman and they have eight children. Three of their children are in Senior Secondary School, three in Junior Secondary School and two in primary schools. Alhaji Isssa S. has been selling medicine for over twenty-two years now. This loan will go a long way in helping Alhaji, he told me. Being able to buy the drugs in wholesale alone has saved him enough money, when compared to receiving the drugs from wholesalers.
About Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT)
Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is Kiva’s oldest field partner in Sierra Leone. SMT began operations in 2002 as a microcredit program of the NGO Child Fund Sierra Leone under a USAID program to assist the reintegration of ex combatants back into their communities. Today, SMT offers group, agricultural, individual and salary loans to micro-entrepreneurs through six branches and one sub-branch in rural, urban, and peri-urban areas. By providing small loans and other financial services, SMT empowers poor clients to generate more income to help their families, improve their wellbeing, and create a more vibrant private small-business sector in Sierra Leone.
